THEY NEVER THOUGHT THIS WOULD HAPPEN -AND WHY I’M TURNING DUTCH
Last Friday morning I woke up earlier than usual. Menno was still asleep. I didn’t want to wake him, so I started scrolling through Facebook on my phone in bed. I was greeted by a mass of posts along the lines of “Oh my God, what just happened” and many other posts filled with fear and hatred. It was official, the UK had voted to leave the EU. Brexit was going to happen.
I felt paralysed with fear. My life in Austria, my job, my business. What would it all mean if I was no longer an EU citizen. Would I have to apply for a visa? Would I loose my right to work without applying for a permit? Would I even still be allowed to run my business?? I was scared, and I was ANGRY!
Since Menno is from the Netherlands, I looked at what was required to become a Dutch citizen so I could remain a member of the EU. I even aced the practice citizenship test that I took!
And what happened for the rest of the day? These negative feelings consumed me. And I ended up having a terrible day, making myself physically sick and going to bed with a migrane.
These negative thoughts were literally poison in my body.
The following morning I woke up, and I decided to let it all go.
I decided to choose hope.
I decided to choose love and forgiveness over hate and name calling
I decided to be understanding of those who may have a different view point to mine
I decided to wake up and practice kindness and gratitue every day.
I am a citizen of the world. I am responsible for my journey and my future. It is up to me to create the life and the future I desire.
I’m Cat. British passport, Austrian resident, wife and rabbit mum. I'm based in Innsbruck Austria, but I love going on new adventures. I love photographing couples in wild landscapes as they embark on one of life’s greatest adventures, marriage. And I really do love a good wedding.
